Lend a Hand Group

Many people locally have very good family and friends support systems but sometimes extra neighbourly support can help people who are ill or disabled .

The Northern Fells Lend a Hand Group is a group of volunteers with the aim of giving neighbourly help to anybody who, due to ill health or disability, is in need of help, i.e. anyone of any age with temporary or chronic ill health or disability, and their carers.

There are two areas of help offered:

Handyman Help

People are offered up to 2 hours help. Clients pay for Materials.

(The scheme cannot undertake bigger jobs. The Northern Fells Group Services and Organisations leaflet will help you find local tradesmen.)

The handyman scheme covers the following types of jobs:

  • Minor decorating
  • Garden help
  • Cleaning house yards
  • Handyman repairs e.g. repairing and putting up rails, changing light bulbs, putting on new electric plugs, mending tap washers, etc.

Ask us if you have a small job that needs doing.

Interested in Becoming a Helper?

Handyman helpers give two hours each month on a Saturday or in an evening during the week.

Red Cross helpers give between two and four hours a week or a fortnight – whatever they can offer. They receive basic Red Cross training:

  • A Red Cross Welcome Day to learn about the Red Cross and its principles, and about health and safety matters.
  • Four hours of basic First Aid.

Their references are checked by the Red Cross

Telephone Doreen Gleed on 016973 71947 if you are interested in the group
